I'm planning to go, but gutted that the autocross is on gravel... Not sure if I could enter that...

Yes the gravel is a bugger. I'm not sure either. I have done one event in the same location in a corolla and it cut up a bit. However there were a lot of 4wd cars there that day including Emma Gilmour in her swift.

I'm thinking with the type event we are less likely to see too many of those cars and the surface will last longer.

I will certainly be entering the 7 on Saturday for the Motorkhana & Bent sprint.

Might not make it afterall...

Had a practise session last night at Ruapuna and the T piece holding both the oil pressure senders (light and gauge) snapped off flush at the block which pissed oil EVERYWHERE. I feel quite lucky there was no fire to put out - it's all over the extractors, exhaust etc.

I checked the gopro footage and fortunately there was still oil pressure when I switched the engine off and there were no funny noises so I am hopeful there's no major issues... I have someone going to attempt to get the broken off bit of brass out of the block tomorrow morning and install just a oil gauge sender... Hopefully that means it will be up and running by tomorrow night so I can then give it a good clean and should hopefully be back in business... But if anything doesn't go perfectly I won't be able to make it :-(

Thanks for that... I had a blast really... Despite the gravel Autocross being my worst result (10th out of about 30ish) I did well enough in the other events to pick up second overall. I really choked in the motorkhana with the changing conditions (dry to wet, and I changed tyres halfway from road tyres to semi-slicks on the rear) and easily cost myself the win with a bad decision and a couple of driving errors. Bah.

The bent sprint was horrible to start... I was one of the first cars on track and it was wet... Unbelievably greasy... After my run a car put itself into the tyres hard and stopped plat for a while. My second and third runs however were in the complete dry and it was an awesome track they setup. Just a shame I didn't have more representative runs in the dry.

On the sunday it was a gravel autocross at a nearby quarry and wow... I've NEVER driven competitively on gravel before in my life, in anything... so I was nervous... However after the slow recce run I was excited - a lot more ground clearance and rally tyres made the car into a brilliant handling gravel machine and had three fantastic blasts around the course. I was getting faster on each run and had a huge smile on my face.

Here's the final run...

and a shot from the day...

Good effort! Gravel is great fun, just a bit hard on paint.

Yep - one of the big reasons I entered was that the car is not only due for a new vinyl but I already have the new vinyl at home ready to put on, and the CF parts have all been remade/refurbished by an AirNZ engineer mate to a terrific standard.

Over Easter I'll strip it all back and make it pretty again. In a new colour :-)
