Howdy - regretably I can't be there as only just back from o/seas so couldn't juggle!
If a mate has his car back together in time would be cool, he races no. 88 in f5000- yellow Lola so won't miss it!)....his wheels won't be as shiny as normal as that's my 'official' job (he won't let me turn spanners for some reason!!!
That'd be cool.

Cool - great pics on Facebook...were you tempted to use the really bright flash on the 7's as they went past in a fit of jealousy given they were thrashing them around instead of you??

Well, a great weekend marred on Sunday by a major accident involving a 7... Gary Cooper in a quick (hand held timed laps at 1:35 in traffic) Caterham Super 7 with a BDA engine tangled with at least one single seater a hundred metres or so after the hairpin. This resulted in a major accident with Garys car somersaulting end over end before coming to rest right side up. There were some big impacts but a friend of mine with a larger lens than I looked through and saw him undo his own seatbelt before being told not to move.

He was taken away on a stretcher in an ambulance but as I say was moving under his own steam immediately after the accident. No, I don't have pics of the accident. I was eating lunch in the main stands and watching the race so did see it.

I've often said I'll not race my car wheel to wheel before and this just confirms it. There's also the questionable decision to run the 7s in among the grid of usually much faster single seaters like Ralt RT4s etc. However if you clamped down on all the dodgy safety concerns in classic racing, you wouldn't have any classic racing. I have nightmare inducing photos from a few years ago of someone sliding a massive old car around the sweeper, in traffic, with no roll bar and only a lap belt. At least he was wearing a helmet.

Anyway, I hope Garys ok. His car is certainly not ok. I'd be very surprised if the frame wasn't toast.

Does anyone have have any footage of this accident or photos of what was left of the car? I heard it was a horrific crash. Someone told me (another driver) that the car went vertically 25 feet in the air! Thank goodness it was not a fatal!! I heard the driver had broken ribs and an injured shoulder. At least he is OK. As for the car, it does not really matter as that is replaceable.

I don't have any footage or photos of the actual accident, and the car is no-where near as badly destroyed as I expected from an accident of that magnitude. From at least one of the photos though it looks as if the entire frame is twisted significantly. I think he was very lucky the end end over end actually hit both the front of the car and the rear right of the car pretty straight on, so while the forces were huge, the driver never actually hit the ground himself.

I don't think it was 25 feet high, but in one of the tumbles it was pointing straight down, and off the ground by about it's own length. He's lucky to have just broken ribs and shoulder injury (if in fact that's accurate).

Oh, and in the first photo below you can see an empty GoPro housing on the car, so perhaps he was filming himself.

I had been talking to the guys involved with this car in the pits ten minutes before, and it is such a shame to see a beautifull car like that unneccessarilly destroyed, the single seaters should have been started in their own group 1 minute before and let themselves sort out during the race this was on the first lap!

A bit of a thread dredge I know, but I ran into Gary Cooper a couple of weeks ago when I was working in Dunedin. He runs Fourwheel Drive Parts 2003 Ltd from 17 Donald Street, Kaikorai Valley. He tells me that he is still suffering from a bad back, but otherwise is doing ok.

He has a couple of original Lotus twin cam engines and gearboxes as well as BDA engines with gearboxes (Quaife I think) that he will sell to you if you want them, along with a collection of various go faster bits from his cars. There was a new chassis sitting on a jig in the workshop, but I didn't get much of a look at that. As I recall he told me the car itself was sitting locked in a container in his yard but was expected one day to return to the track.
