Hourly charge out rates

Post by steveb » Wed Jan 04, 2017 9:47 am

Hourly charge out rates, what are we being charged for services around the car building industry?
Just trying to get a gauge of what is being charged, and for what. Is Auckland overpriced or close to the rest of NZ?
So come on and tell your worst/ best experience's. perhaps best not to name name's....

It's not often that I pay for work but in the last little while I payed $65 for general mechanical work and $95 for specialist work / fab . I would imagine most users on here would be able to handle most things them selves. What I can't do "most things" I call on friends with the ability - only downside is that it's not priority work . These are in Auckland

One of the reasons I do most work myself - including stuff I don't know how to do, is because I have been unsatisfied with quite a bit of the work I have farmed out (not all). Both the 7 and 23 had 2 sets of A arms made. Basicly because the blokes who said they could weld it - couldn't. Of course you still need access to the gear and that forces my hand sometimes. If you are gouing to get someone to do work for you, choose wisely. However, if you are building the car for the purpose of self improvement, you might as well give most things a go.

Of course, the other side of the equation is how long it takes someone to do a job. Half the rate ain't a bargain if they take twice the time. My car came with a stack of receipts from a workshop that hadn't actually achieved anything because they couldn't figure out what was stopping the carbs from running properly. They only charged at $60 per hour according to the receipts but it was hardly a bargain. A specialist charging half as much again would have been straight onto it and would have represented much better value - that's what you're paying for. Off course there are plenty of idiots also charging top rates....

$90 an hour sounds like a good rate from Fraser Cars considering the quality of their work and the facilities they have. Honda Cars charge that rate for a pimply technician to plug a computer into your engine management system so they know what to replace. :?
