Post by Not-a-Number » Tue Dec 29, 2015 9:19 pm

I need to replace my rear wheel bearings. Escort/cortina MK1 etc, dont know the exact type. Does anyone have a guide on how to do it?

Any tricks to it?

Think I know how its done but Id rather have a read first.

Remove rear wheel. Remove brake drum and reverse this on the studs to act as a slide hammer to remove axle. Take these to a workshop with a press and get them to change them unless you have a press yourself.

as above but, undo the four bolts holding the axle/bearing to the diff housing while you've got the brake drum off - there's a hole in the hub for access to these bolts

Do I have to drain the diff oil?

Is it a pretty standard bearing that I could get at repco?

If you jack it up high enough on that side you will probably get away with not draining the oil.

Repcos might have the bearings - bearing supply shops are usually better (and cheaper)

Never drained the diff oil when I did mine. BNT are far cheaper than Repco if you have one near by

Agree about BNT prices-though it pays to shop around for prices, generally BNT's prices are very competitive. Have also found our Hastings branch very knowledgeable and helpful with tricky problems (unlike some of the other parts outfits).
If you can get friendly with the BNT staff at your local branch, ask for a "Trade Card" which will get you an extra 25% discount.
