Sunday 20th March North Canterbury Classic Tour

Post by KiwiBirkin » Mon Feb 07, 2011 4:19 pm

HI all just added this to the confirmed events list as I have just received the date for it this trip is organised by Trevor Stanley & his wife who writes for NZ Classic Cars magazine. Trevor has now organised these runs for 8 years in a row and has any where from 250-150 cars who turn up depending on the weather, I went on my first one last year and in the day we covered some 450kms all over the North side of Canterbury as far up as Gore bay, it was a great day out with all sorts of cars from Mazda MX5s to Shelby Mustangs right through to little Austin 7s. All cars head away with a guide book with instructions and a question sheet to answer about things we pass on the way so you really need a co-driver along for the day. (last year i won a 12 month sub to NZ Classic Car mag) I plan on going and its all ready pencilled in my diary it would be great to have another bunch of Clubmans along for the day along with the SLR club members who attend.

Below is the latest info from Trevor this years planned trip.

Well it’s now only 5 weeks to go before our 9th annual North Canterbury Classic Tour. Theres at least three changes I would like to point out.

First of all, I have always produced a poster for my other event the Henry Ford Memorial Rally (run either the last Sunday in July or August) but never one for this NCCT event. As an experiment, I have for this year. The seven large photos featured on it were taken at our lunch break at the Waiau Primary School during the 2010 NCCT. I have had only forty (40) produced and they will be on sale at the start venue at $5 each. (The photos all feature participants lunching beside their classics). It’s a nice poster, so I hope they all sell, and if so, I will repeat again next year, with photos taken at this year’s lunch break venue.

Secondly as the Avon View Rest Home in Locksley Avenue is not available to drive through due to a rebuilding programme, we will be issuing the questionnaire sheet at an exit from the Hawke Street car park. Be absolutely sure to exit the one indicated by road cones and signs.

Thirdly the lunch venue for this year is our furtherest point. This was chosen as a result of a question sheet we put with our route sheet a couple of years ago. Many of our regulars indicated that they would like to visit this venue. And while on the subject of ‘regulars’ we would like to thank the many we have. I know that many of you have been on all previous eight tours. (We must be doing something right).

Hope to see you all on Sunday 20th March from 9am. Registrations close at 10am. Vehicles will depart progressively from 9.15am. Please depart as close as possible to the start time indicated on your route sheet. Still only $10 per vehicle (153 classics entered year). Janel Coffee Lounge, Hawke Street car park, New Brighton, Christchurch.

Sounds good Steve, Ladybird and I might just be starters :) Provided the day is right of course :P And of course the small matter of some binding brakes to resolve first :!:

I would love to come down for this, but unfortunately will not be home in time.

I brought our Escort Mexico replica of Trevor a few years back and have kept in touch since. Trevor and his wife Lorraine are great people who got hit pretty hard by the earthquake.

Will be great to see heaps of Lotus 7's support this event.

I talked to Trevor last night and after much deliberation he has decided to proceed with this event, with some minor changes to the meeting point. See copy of email below.

"Hi to all

After considerable deliberation, we have decided to proceed with the NCCT on Sunday March 20th, as per original plan.

However, there is one major alteration, owing to the difficulty in reaching New Brighton by road, due to the earthquake. The start venue now is at the ALPINE VIEW LIFESTYLE VILLAGE, 448 Prestons Road, Burwood. (About 200 yards east of the Vege Pot).

The registration point is in the show home. Over the bridge (left side) and it’s just there on your left. Only enough parking for 8-10 cars at any one time, so you may have to part out on Prestons Road.

The normal charge of $10 will apply but we will also be raising funds for the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal. (The donation amount from the participants is over to them, but please be a little on the generous side).

We have a new sponsor for the event in the form of Stewart’s Classics. See the half page advertisement in Buy/Sell paper.

Regards to all, and we hope to see as many of you as possible on Sunday March 20th (9am – 10am start).

ps lunch can be purchased about 3k before our final destination, at a country shop/cafe/bar.

Trevor & Lorraine Stanley-Joblin

pps please spread the news to all classic car people."

Like alot of people in Christchurch, Trevor and Lorraine have been hit pretty hard by both earthquakes with their home a "right-off" in his words so support of this event I am sure will boost their morales somewhat. We will be coming down to Dunedin passing by Christchurch on Friday, and will be bringing our Escort (which Trevor built). We will be leaving this with him for the weekend, which he was super pleased about, as his garage has nearly fallen down and all of his cars shipped out to be stored in "safe" surroundings.

I might be around at the registration area to get a look at some of the cars. Might tag along for a wee while.
