What muffler to use?

Post by Not-a-Number » Thu May 29, 2014 8:35 am

I want something small like what I already have. Small stainless Coby style resonators.

If I used a couple of these in series would they provide enough muffling?
Is a resonator essentially the same thing as a muffler but not as good?

Thinking one stainless and one coby and wrap the coby in heat stuff.

Or the other option is I make one.

I dont want a dirty big muffler on there.

Find a straight thru muffler (same internally as a coby), but with more volume. Stainless ones are available. Look at Autobend and Coby catalogues.

Something with an internal chamber as well as the straight thru absorbtion sections helps kill the noise when a straight thru struggles. However a turbo acts great as a muffler....

I had the same issue, couldnt find anything that I was happy with the way it looked so made one. 125 in diameter 600 long 1.2mm BA stainless with a 50mm louvered internal pipe. Packed it with stainless wool around the core then fiberglass around that.

Talk to Mark at McGregor's. He did my muffler and it is great. Good sound and just enough muffling, well almost!

i got a pair of stainless OE bike exhausts from a GSXR 1100, 100 dollars for the pair, then a second hand 4 branch extractor 100 dollars, took them to Magoo mufflers, tacked pipes in place tried them on, adjusted and re welded, 80 dollars, perfect fit all in total cost 280 dollars and i have a spare pipe.
not sure of the sound yet, but it should be ok, after all im building a LOCOST 7

Mark made my muffler too, very similar to Grant's one (identical?). You can pretty much see through it, some baffles but no mesh or gauze in there I don't think. Warbles at idle, barks a little under power, passes emission and noise level tests without any funny business :)
May pay to get a quote from him?
