Quick Release Steering Wheel

Hi Guys and Gals,

I couldn't find any info on NZ legalities around quick release steering wheels so I asked on the LVVTA forum and got a great answer for all of us who are interested.

Yes, you can have a quick release wheel in a vehicle such as a scratch-built Lotus 7 replica, to ease with access. Though it is one of the few remaining times you can have a quick release on a road car.

From the Hobby Car Technical Manual

7.5 Quick-release steering wheels

7.5.1
A steering wheel fitted to a low volume vehicle that is able to be
removed and re-attached without the use of tools to assist entry
and exit to and from the vehicle, must:
(a) self-lock into position, with no separate devices or nonintegral
parts of the system required to lock the wheel into
its locked position; and
(b) not be able to be removed without a deliberate and firm
action applied in order to achieve the removal.

The cheap cast ones available on Trade-me and other sights ( including performance car part shops) will not pass LVVTA scrutineering. They need to be machined from billet aluminium.

i used one of the scarles ones and no worries at all at cert time
